This year already saw one Stephen King novel hit the big screen with The Dark Tower. Sadly, that one didn’t turn out as well as some had hoped, but that’s not the last Stephen King property that will be making its way. What’s more, everything we’ve seen of the upcoming horror movie IT has looked amazing so far, including actor Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Pennywise the Clown.
In today’s day and age, everyone has their own opinion of what’s actually scary. Some think that true horror is something silently sitting in the shadows, whereas some actually like to see what it is they’re looking at. If you’re a part of the latter, then rejoice, for IT will feature a very prominent villain in Pennywise the Clown — as one would expect, given the source material.
Speaking with EW, director Andy Muschietti spoke to that idea, saying:
“He is present. It’s not like one of those movies where you can hide the monster. He’s front and center, he does his show, and he has an act. He is a clown.”
So where does the horror lie? If there is little mystery for the imagination, where do the scares come from? Actor Bill Skarsgård thinks that some of the scares lie in Pennywise’s dark and twisted sense of humor.
“IT Truly enjoys the shape of the clown Pennywise, and enjoys the game and the hunt. What’s funny to this evil entity might not be funny to everyone else. But he thinks it’s funny.”
“Keep it weird,” Muschietti added. “It’s weird all the time. Pennywise does things that make absolutely no sense, but they’re very disturbing because of the weirdness.”
We’ve seen a couple trailers from the film so far, and we have to say, we can see where this is coming from. As shown above, there is one scene in particular where Pennywise is in some kids TV show, and while there is something a bit funny about it, it’s also black as night in its approach.

Stephen King’s IT hits theaters on September 8, 2017.
