Sony isn’t a studio content with playing second fiddle to Marvel Studios. Sure, Marvel Studios may have all the cards in terms of the established universe, but Sony has its stable of heroes and villains within the Spider-Man pocket universe of the Marvel world. Why not utilize them? So despite Spider-Man: Homecoming having just hit theaters, Sony has been hard at work with the Tom Hardy-starring Venom flick, as well as the team-up film Silver and Black, which follows characters Silver Sable and Black Cat.
But what will the film actually be about? ThatHashtagShow had the details, and it’s a lot to take in.
For starters, according to the outlet, the film’s primary protagonist will be Silver Sable. She has a personal vendetta against the movie’s main villain Mendel Stromm, who has performed experiments on the Symkarian people — who hail from the fictional kingdom of Symkaria in eastern Europe. He’s also had some unsavory dealings with her father, and as such, she has it out for him. When she is hired by the U.S. Department of Justice to take in Felicia Hardy (a.k.a Black Cat) — a thief who stole from the wrong people — she sees this as an opportunity to get closer to Stromm, as Felicia stole from Stromm himself. What did she steal? The details are vague, but it’s referred to as an “enhancement” by Stromm.
In an attempt to take back what’s his, Stromm also sends Tarantula and Scorpion after Black Cat, only to find that she’s been taken in by Silver Sable.
Regarding the casting, it looks like they’re going to be looking for women in their mid-twenties to take on the roles of the leads.
Honestly, as someone who’s been more than a little skeptical over everything Sony has been doing lately, this sounds like a really fun story for them to tell. Between all the factions in the story, Black Cat in the middle, and the MacGuffin in the form of the “enhancement.” It has the elements for a fun, action-packed, Snatch-type film with a couple of kickass female leads.
We often harp on Hollywood for not being original, and while this isn’t really an original idea, it’s a new take on a comic book property, and I have immense respect for it. Now, we can only hope that they execute on this.
